Mast Repair - Lift Trucks

Mast repair and maintenance for forklifts is critical, not only do you want it working efficiently, safety is a main concern when it comes to lift chains and fork repairs. If lift chains are stretched out past safety requirements, then your forklift can be sloppy and cause injury or damage. We can help you judge when the best and most cost effective time to maintain these items is.

All The Forklifts

There are seven different forklift classes. The classifications are based on the fuel type, application and features of the forklifts.

CLASS I.
Electric Motor Rider Trucks

A class I forklift has an electric motor and operators may either stand or sit when operating the truck. These forklifts have a heavy battery used to power the truck that also acts as a counterweight, which is why you will often find them referred to as counterbalanced.

These trucks are extremely versatile and can have either cushion or pneumatic tires. The most common designs have three wheels, but they also come in 4-wheel variations. Models using pneumatic tires are designed for outdoor applications while cushion-tired trucks are best suited for flat, indoor surfaces.

CLASS II.
Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Trucks

Class II forklifts use solid, cushioned tires and are designed to work in smaller spaces. Many of these forklifts are designed to work with attachments that allow them to do highly specific jobs. Examples of class II forklifts include order pickers, reach trucks, side loaders and stand up riders. These types of forklifts are designed for efficiency of space and speed of operation.

CLASS III.
Electric Motor Hand or Hand/Rider Trucks

These lifts are very commonly used for transporting materials that require low lifts. These trucks can easily move product around the floor of the warehouse without the need to place the product on a high shelf or rack. Hand trucks are often operated by a handle at the rear of the truck and a hand control is used to steer as the operator walks, or rides, it to its destination. There are also motorized pallet jacks in this category that have seats.

CLASS IV.
Internal Combustion Engine Trucks (Cushion Tires)

The name of this forklift category sums up what you get with them. These are internal combustion forklifts that have cushion tires and run on diesel, gasoline, LP gas or compressed natural gas[LW1]. Some forklifts in this category are counterbalanced and can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications, assuming there are dry smooth floors. Class IV forklifts stay low to the ground, making them good for low clearance applications and are often used to move items from loading docks to storage areas.

CLASS V.
Internal Combustion Engine Trucks (Pneumatic Tires)

One of the most flexible classes of forklifts, class V trucks can be used inside or outside due to their pneumatic tires and have a wide range of capacities, making them a popular choice for warehouses of all shapes and sizes. For more rugged outdoor applications, these lift trucks can be outfitted with special solid pneumatic tires to reduce the risk of being punctured while on the job. Their internal combustion engines can be powered by compressed natural gas, diesel, gas and LP gas.

CLASS VI.
Electric and Internal Combustion Engine Tractors

Commonly seen at airports pulling luggage carts, a class VI forklift is used more for pulling than lifting. Class VI forklifts are often referred to as “tuggers” and can be either internal combustion or electric.

CLASS VII.
Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks

These forklifts are heavy duty and usually have large tractor-like tires on them. These can be found at sites that require a lot of power like construction sites, auto recyclers, and lumber yards. Class VII forklifts are almost exclusively diesel and come in both two and four-wheel drive options. These lift trucks can come equipped with different types of masts as well, sometimes including a telescoping mast to provide more reach. The main distinction with these forklifts are the large, flotation like pneumatic tires made specifically for outdoor terrain.

Types Of Equipment

Some of the most common industrial handling equipment we work on includes:

3-Wheel Forklifts,  4-Wheel Forklifts,  Articulating Boom Lifts,  Backhoes,  Carry Deck Cranes,  Dozers,  Electric Forklifts,  Empty / Laden Container Handlers,  Excavators,  Forklifts,  Rider Pallet Jacks/Trucks,  IC (Internal Combustion) Forklifts,  Loaders,  Mast Reach Trucks,  Moving Mast Reach Trucks,  Narrow Aisle Forklifts,  Order Pickers,  Pantograph Reach Trucks,  Reach Stackers,  Rough Terrain Scissors,  Side Loaders,  Single Man Lifts & Work Platforms,  Skidsteers,  Slab Scissor Lifts,  Squirt Booms,  Straight Or Telescopic Boom Lifts,  Stump Grinders ,  Telehandlers,  Tow Tractors / Tuggers,  Turret Trucks,  Walkie Stackers

Electric Forklifts

Generally, electric powered forklifts will have higher upfront costs compared to IC forklifts, but tend to have lower maintenance costs and a longer operating life. Lower emissions also make electric forklifts ideal for indoor warehouses or enclosed environments.

Run times are another important consideration when choosing a lift truck. Because electric forklifts need to be charged to operate, trucks that run longer than one shift eliminate the needs to stop in the middle of a shift to recharge a battery. Some electric forklifts have a 2 shift 1 charge guarantee that ensures 16-hour runtimes on a single battery charge. The benefits include the potential for more productivity from both the forklift operator and lower battery costs.

IC Forklifts

Internal Combustion (IC) forklifts are more commonly used in outdoor applications. They are designed to lift heavy materials. Generally, IC forklifts have a lift capacity from 3,000 – 36,000 lbs. depending on the model. These lift trucks offer dependable performance.

3-Wheel Forklifts

Three-wheel forklifts have a smaller turning radius compared to four-wheel forklifts, which makes them ideal when working in tight spaces. Three-wheel forklifts have a counterbalance, which allows the forklift to lift heavy loads with just three wheels. Better maneuverability when compared to four-wheel forklifts often make these forklifts ideal for indoor warehouses or work environments where storage space is at a premium.

4-Wheel Forklifts

When compared to three-wheel forklifts, four-wheel forklifts have better gradeability, or a forklift truck’s ability to operate on a slope.

Four-wheel forklifts are generally more powerful, have better stability than three-wheel forklifts and can operate with heavier loads. They are also designed to operate on uneven surfaces or surfaces that are not completely smooth. This makes four-wheel forklifts more ideal for outdoor environments, or areas where space is more open.

Pantograph Reach Trucks

Reach trucks are designed specifically for use in warehouse environments. Their name comes from the ability to “reach” beyond their stabilizing legs at great heights. Similar to three-wheel forklifts, they have excellent maneuverability and are able to turn tight corners in a crowded workspace.

Reach trucks are categorized into several different areas based on their application, including moving mast reach trucks, and pantograph reach trucks.

Moving Mast Reach Trucks

The masts of these forklifts are designed to move horizontally. This makes it easier on operators to reach loads at high heights without having to move the base of the forklift. When correct fork placement is easier, productivity can be greatly improved.

Narrow Aisle Forklifts

Narrow aisle forklifts are also known as narrow aisle order pickers. As the name implies, they are designed to operate in narrow warehouse spaces. Narrow aisle forklifts can be categorized as Narrow Aisle (NA) or Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) forklifts.

Order Pickers

Order pickers are specifically designed for order picking applications and to make the order picking process as simple and cost efficient as possible.

Order pickers are typically designed to raise or lower operators to the same level that the load is located. This type of forklift gives operators the ability to pick specific items from a pallet without lowering the contents of the pallet. Order pickers are often categorized based on the heights operators need to reach racks.

Turret Trucks

Turret trucks are very narrow aisle forklifts that allow the carriage to rotate 180⁰ to pick items within warehouse storage aisles. Because the forks of the turret truck can be rotated without moving the truck itself, the turret truck can retrieve items in narrow aisles with efficiency.

Hand Pallet Trucks

Also known as manual pallet trucks, pallet jacks and pedestrian-operated pallet trucks. These hand held forklifts are used to transport pallets in storage facilities and indoor warehouse environments. Hand pallet trucks are manually operated and make use of a hydraulic jack to lift a pallet load for transport.

Hand pallet trucks are designed for moving pallets at ground level and are not designed to lift loads at high heights or to stack loads on top of one another. They are not typically suited for outdoor environments or uneven surfaces. Hand pallet trucks are small, easy to operate and have a low overall operating cost. All of this makes hand pallet trucks a great addition to any warehouse environment.

Scissor Lifts

Self-propelled slab and rough terrain lifts, heights from 12’ to 53’ are commonly used to handle routine maintenance in buildings with high ceilings, but can be used for a number of tasks involving high, hard to reach areas. Versatile, single-person electric push-around and drivable lifts provide safety and flexibility for smaller jobs and workspaces.

Boom Lifts

Heights from 30’ to 185’, two-wheel or four-wheel drive and models that will put you within reach faster and easier than scaffolding. Whether the need is maneuvering into tight spaces or for higher access jobs, maintenance contractors, builders and facility managers rely on the versatility of electric, bi-energy and engine rough terrain lifts.

Telehandlers

The power, reach and versatility you need with a capacity of 5,000 to 12,000 lbs and heights of 19’ to 55’, plus all-wheel steering, along with two-wheel, four-wheel circle and four-wheel crab. Attachments allow a single machine to handle even more tasks for loading/unloading and moving/placing materials, as well as job site cleanup.
